Leasing Gym Equipment

Leasing gym equipment can be a great way to get a variety of machines for your gym without having to pay a ton of money for them.  Many people are leasing gym equipment for their home gym and many others lease commercial gym equipment.  Either way the basic set up is the same and the relative pros and cons are the same.  In principle at the end of the day you are going to return the equipment which will then be sold as used gym equipment and either begin leasing gym equipment that is brand new, or end your lease.

Leasing gym equipment for your home is really quite simple and is thought of more as a sort of rental agreement.  The only way to do this though is if you plan to add multiple pieces to the gym.  A commercial gym equipment leasing company is not going to let you lease unless you plan to have a lot of pieces; several weight stations, a treadmill, an elliptical, some machine stations etc.  The reason here is that it is too costly for them to deal with you if you are not going to lease in bulk.

Commercial gym equipment is designed for heavy use and low functionality.  Rarely will you see an inlaid television with a treadmill at a fitness center.  Usually they are your standard heavy duty used treadmills that can carry users for miles and miles all day long but don’t have too many features in the way of pre-programmed workouts, or variable speeds.  The heart rate monitors hardly ever work and you are lucky if you can type in the speed you want to run at because most just have arrows.

There are many benefits to leasing gym equipment; cost and maintenance.  Just like when you lease a car you are not in charge of any maintenance issues and any repairs that come up from natural driving.  Also, you will pay much less to rent than you would to own allowing you to diversify the amount of things you can do when leasing gym equipment.

The cons are that when the lease is up you have essentially just paid to have use of the equipment and it is then returned to the company who holds the lease for them to sell on the open market.  Often it is cheaper to buy used treadmills or other gym equipment pieces and just sell them when you no longer need them.

Electric Treadmills Varying Styles and Functions

Before you run off to the used gym equipment store, it is important to be aware of the differences between competing electric treadmills classes. You may start your preparation by thinking that a treadmill is a treadmill, but that is simply not true. To be fair, there is a point at which a treadmill has so many functions and so many keys on the dashboard you may think you need an engineering degree to properly use the machine.

The very basic electric treadmills are the very basic for a few reasons. First, they have limited programming functionality. That means the treadmill is unable to give you a variety of running routines, mixing incline with speed. Having a diverse set of routines keeps your workout fresh and new. If you are the one that always has to do determine speed, distance and incline, than your human nature will choose the path of least resistance. On the other hand, if you are an avid runner, you are well aware of how to vary the speed and distance of your workouts, which means multiple functions may not be something you will want.

Here is Lori from Ford Models explaining how she uses interval training in her workouts.

Some people are persuaded to purchase treadmills because they offer heart rate monitoring, and the truth is unfortunately those heart rate monitors rarely work. If the heart rate monitor does work, it is hardly ever accurate.

Medium grade electric treadmills will offer a decent amount of programming functionality and may allow to adjust speed with both an arrow and nine key pad number system. That may not sound like a big deal, but when you are cruising along at 6 miles per hour, it is much easier to hit the 3 button than it is to hold the arrow down and wait for the speed to drop. These treadmills also offer a small variety of pre-programmed routines which can help you get a better workout.

The highest grad treadmills will offer everything from automatic fans to blow air in your face, inset plasma TV’s, and a long list of pre-programmed workouts. While I enjoy using the highest grade treadmill, they do not necessarily provide anything extra to the home treadmill experience.  You control the temperature of your house, you can place the treadmill in front of  a TV, you can customize the experience however you would like. o

Just make sure that when you buy used treadmills you choose one that meets your needs.
