Leasing gym equipment can be a great way to get a variety of machines for your gym without having to pay a ton of money for them. Many people are leasing gym equipment for their home gym and many others lease commercial gym equipment. Either way the basic set up is the same and the relative pros and cons are the same. In principle at the end of the day you are going to return the equipment which will then be sold as used gym equipment and either begin leasing gym equipment that is brand new, or end your lease.
Leasing gym equipment for your home is really quite simple and is thought of more as a sort of rental agreement. The only way to do this though is if you plan to add multiple pieces to the gym. A commercial gym equipment leasing company is not going to let you lease unless you plan to have a lot of pieces; several weight stations, a treadmill, an elliptical, some machine stations etc. The reason here is that it is too costly for them to deal with you if you are not going to lease in bulk.
Commercial gym equipment is designed for heavy use and low functionality. Rarely will you see an inlaid television with a treadmill at a fitness center. Usually they are your standard heavy duty used treadmills that can carry users for miles and miles all day long but don’t have too many features in the way of pre-programmed workouts, or variable speeds. The heart rate monitors hardly ever work and you are lucky if you can type in the speed you want to run at because most just have arrows.
There are many benefits to leasing gym equipment; cost and maintenance. Just like when you lease a car you are not in charge of any maintenance issues and any repairs that come up from natural driving. Also, you will pay much less to rent than you would to own allowing you to diversify the amount of things you can do when leasing gym equipment.
The cons are that when the lease is up you have essentially just paid to have use of the equipment and it is then returned to the company who holds the lease for them to sell on the open market. Often it is cheaper to buy used treadmills or other gym equipment pieces and just sell them when you no longer need them.
