Elliptical vs Treadmill

So there I am this morning cruising along on the treadmill running some alternating sprints as my treadmill workout, when I see a new row of ellipticals just a few feet away.  It is interesting to note that the treadmills are mainly used by guys and the ellipticals are mainly used by girls.  So this got me to thinking what was better in the elliptical vs treadmill battle.  I guess in the end it boils down to what kind of workout you want in the short and longer term.

The elliptical workout is going to be great if you need to relieve some stress on your joints but will only provide a great long term health benefit if you really REALLY push yourself.  The design of the elliptical machine is to reduce the impact of your feet against the floor and still allow you to have resistance to your legs and create a cardio effort.  However, if you just kind of ho hum on the machine and glide without effort you are going to burn 20 calories per 10 minutes at best.  You’d have to use the machine for almost 2 hours to burn off a doughnut.

A treadmill workout on the other hand is going to involve more of your muscles because you are required to lift your body up and down off the machine as you run vs the elliptical where your feet are stationary in the pedals.  This causes more of your muscles to be put into action and if you work them by running for an extended period of time you are going to develop resistance strength as well as cardio and heart strength.

The hands down winner for elliptical vs treadmill weight loss and calories burned is the treadmill.  But like any exercise it comes down to how often you use it and the intensity you are using it with.  If you give a 100% effort on the elliptical machine with only 50% effort on the treadmill you are obviously going to have a better elliptical workout.
