For me I like to use 3 machines at the gym in preparation for different events.  I use the gym about 50% of the training time, depending on the weather because of the controlled conditions and easy access.  I use an elliptical workout to make sure I am warm before I lift free weights.  I hop on the used treadmills to get my long distance running in.  Finally I use the stationary bike to really give my quads consistent resistance as I train for the biking.

Stationary bikes are a great way to bring the gym into your home and stay or get in shape on your own terms and on your own time.  There are some distinct advantages to stationary bikes over standard treadmills and elliptical machines you may have considered for your home exercise equipment.  When it  comes to the various types of stationary bikes you have a few options, recumbent or up-right.

I personally am not I biking enthusiast so I have rarely ever used stationary bikes, but their biggest draw on the market is the impact to the joints as you perform the exercise.  Treadmills or out door running will cause severe stress and impact to the major joints in the body which as people get older they tend not to enjoy as much.  Recumbent stationary bikes put you in a seated position and allow your legs to come forward out in front of you while you pedal.  This reduces stress not only on the knees but also on your lower back.

In general stationary bikes are great for those with knee problems or space problems.  A treadmill not only takes the physical space in which you place it, but it will also occupy the general area around itself making it hard to just put in a corner.  The machinery of a stationary bike forces you to sit on top and this makes it a little more space conscious and more apartment friendly.  The final product related advantage to any and all stationary bikes is that the main source of their power is you.  This means there is less of a need for a motor, and more just something to give you some resistance.

The only real advantage of the up-right stationary bike over the recumbent is that the up-right allows you to get out off the seat and pedal without being able to sit.  This can help you burn more calories in the same amount of time.  Assuming of course that you can drive yourself hard enough to actually do that.
